The Story Behind the Logo

12802934_1055076104533677_1699506124719598368_n

I’m ABSOLUTELY in LOVE with my new logo designed by Colleen Stine!!  When I was thinking of ideas for what my logo should be, again, my grandparents (Frank and Joan) were my inspiration.  My grandfather’s favorite think to do was go fishing on the Wabash River with his beloved dog.  (I get my love for dogs and animals from him too!)  I found this picture of my grandfather on the river with his beloved dog, Jubie.  I know you cannot see his face in this picture, but I know he is smiling!

I mean wasn’t he the cutest fisherman ever!

My grandmother LOVED to gamble and play cards!  (unfortunately I do not have any pics of her playing cards. )  This is where I got my love to gamble from!  I can remember setting at her kitchen table, teaching me how to play poker.  We ALWAYS had to gamble and play for something…usually pennies.  I have a scar on my right first finger that I cherish!  So one evening after school, we were playing poker at her kitchen table and I FINALLY beat her!  I was SOOOO excited, I jumped up to cheer and punched out the light in the ceiling fan!!  Needless to say, I cut my finger pretty badly.  I remember my grandmother running in to lay on the couch because she thought she was going to faint at the sight of the blood and my grandfather came running to my rescue.  She was certain I had cut my finger off!!  My finger healed just fine, but to this day I can look down and smile with that memory!

SOOO…that’s how I came up with a fishing pole and a queen of hearts!

I showed this picture on my facebook site and instagram page and said I would share the story of the motor.  My grandfather passed away in 2007.  After he passed away, a friend of his came to my dad and said he found this motor in his barn.  This motor had belonged to my grandfather.  He had been fishing on the river all day and was loading his boat up on the trailer.  His friend was doing the same but had a bummer of a day…he lost him motor.  My grandfather gave him this motor and told him to keep it because he was thinking of getting a new one and now he could.  (Without getting in trouble by my grandmother!  HA!)  Anyway….as the years went on, the friend never got rid of the motor and kept it in an old barn and had forgotten about it.  He found it after my grandfather passed away and asked my dad if he wanted it back.  My mom and dad then surprised me with this to have in my house.  (I should tell you I like quirky antiques like this!)  It’s one of my fav pieces in my house.  Love the story behind it and love how it is now back in the family.

Not to be Mean…. (insert throaty laugh)

12814409_10153454433030754_1307466681049803929_n(1)

They are FINALLY here!!!!  So excited to finally have my mugs in!!!  This one in particular is very special to me!!  I lost a dear friend a little over a year and a half ago in such a tragic way.  Shannon and I taught together.  We were introduced at our first teacher retreat together and found out that she would be my mentor teacher for the year.  We clicked instantly.  I mean how could you not with Shannon, she made every person she came into contact with feel so special.

As the years went on we became close friends and little did we know that our sons would later become BFFs.  Shannon loved her two boys more than life itself.  We loved sharing stories about them, how silly they were, how ornery they were being, how darn cute they were, or how much they were buggin’ at one time or another.  One story from her oldest son is how this quote, not be mean came to be.  I can’t remember what her son was talking about but he started by saying, “Mom, ummm, not to be mean but….” and she told how funny she thought it was.  From then on, it stuck.  SO many times she would say or text, Not to be mean….then followed by that throaty laugh of hers.

To say I miss her is an understatement.  I think of her everyday.  I still teach at the same school, pass her old classroom everyday, and help when I can with her youngest son (who’s still my son’s BFF).  I miss hearing her call me, Jo Jo. (her nickname she gave me)  She will always be with me.  So after meeting with her sister, Colleen, about ways I can expand my little business, we were talking about something and I said, “Not to be mean.”  Colleen said, you have to use that on your first product.  So with her permission, that’s how it came to be on a mug.

I just listed this mug and my Follow Your Arrow mug on my etsy shop.  Click on the link at the top of the page to get yours today!!!

Life is Brimming with Possibilities

12792375_10153448971155754_2382085929186268717_o

My excitement and passion for Frankie Jo’s just keeps growing!!!  Life truly is brimming with possibilities!  On a whim, before I decided to expand Frankie Jo’s, I applied to be considered to become a vendor at the Vintage Farmhouse Market.  I never heard back and just assumed that I didn’t get chosen to be a vendor.  I had kind of forgotten about it after a while.  The week that I officially became a LLC, I received information that I had been chosen to be a vendor!  I was SOOO excited but wait…what all would I put in my booth?  I know had all the paint and supplies covered and had started the process to produce the coffee mugs, but I wanted more.  I had all these ideas of different products, but I am slowly learning everything takes time.  This is something that is a struggle with me.  If you know me, you know if there is something I want, I wanted it like yesterday.  It’s hard for me to wait.  🙂  ANYWAY…while I am waiting, I have thought of so many different ideas.  Each product that I will carry will have a special meaning or connection to me.  In my last post when I revealed the sneak peek, I explained what the meanings were in my first two products which will be in my hands this Friday!!!  I’m so excited to see the finished product up close!!  Who would’ve thought I would be THIS excited over coffee mugs…and I don’t even drink coffee!  HA!!!  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had met with a friend to discuss the possibilities of growing Frankie Jo’s and the next thing I know we are designing mugs!  And I couldn’t be more happy and excited about it!  If you are a fan of hot beverages, check these out!!!

Follow Your Arrow Mug is now available to order on our etsy shop!  (Click the link at the top or bottom of this page.)

70 years ago today….

February 16, 1946 was the day that Frank and Joan SECRETLY got married!!!  This was one of my fav stories that my grandmother told me.  Even though I would tell her, if my mom or myself would have done that, she would have killed us and I remember that ornery smile she would give me back because she knew I was right!

So here’s the story…It began on January 1, 1946.  Joan and her sister Betty got fake IDs and drove to Danville, IL to a little club for New Year’s Eve.  Already there , with some of his friends was Frank, he had only been discharged from the Navy 3 days!  He was planning on moving to Alaska to work on the pipeline…but fate would have other plans.  When Frank saw Joan for the first time, it was love at first sight!  He told his friends, that was the woman he was going to marry.  Frank and Joan began dating and 6 WEEKS later they were married and only a very few close family members knew this.  However, neither of their parents knew as Joan was a senior in high school!  They lived separately until Joan graduated.  Joan graduated valedictorian of her class.  It was during her senior speech at graduation, with Frank sitting next to her mother, that she announced that she was Mrs. Joan Miller.  I can only imagine the look her mother gave him!!  The rest was history.

This story of my grandparents is one of my favs!  It’s totally crazy yet so romantic!  Since today would have been their 70th wedding anniversary, I thought it would be a good time to show what I’ve been working on with a dear friend!  So finally here is the official sneak peek of the first 2 items from Frankie Jo’s.  The sayings on each are special in 2 completely different ways!  12745587_10153416488240754_2331803843578609924_n

Follow your Arrow…these words have stuck with me lately!!  I feel that it is time to do something a little different…hence expanding Frankie Jo’s.  I feel this is something my grandparents (and parents) instilled in me from the time I was a little girl.  I was in every kind of lesson you could think of, just trying to follow my arrow and find my way.  I always had their support and knew if I would fall they would be there to catch me.

Now….for my Shanny mug.  A little over a year and a half ago I lost a dear friend in a horrible tragedy.  Shannon had a way about her that made everyone she came into contact with feel so special.  I had so many inside jokes with Shannon that to this day, I catch myself wanting to text her about something crazy so we could get a laugh out of it.  Most people who knew her, knew the quote, “Not to be mean….” and that her throaty laugh she had would follow.  She actually didn’t come up with this quote, it was her older son, and that would make us laugh even more when she would tell that story.  It was a catch phrase that stuck and then later would be #ntbm on all of our texts.  When I find myself saying it now, I give a little smile to Shannon, as she knows what I’m talking about.

So last week I met with her sister, Colleen, who is helping SO much in expanding this little biz.  As we were talking about what phrases I could do, she was like you have to do this.  With her approval I agreed and LOVE it!  Thanks for ALL you help Colleen!!  I really couldn’t be doing this without you!!

Both of these products will be for sale soon!!!  I’m learning so much about the production side of things, so hopefully within a week these will be in production!  I was SOOOO excited to show what I’ve been up to, that I wanted to share a little sneak peek as to what’s to come!

Coming soon the official details and how you can order these fun mugs.  🙂

Our Story…

12654209_1039080996133188_3976483026556137559_n

Welcome to Frankie Jo’s!  I’m super excited that I am taking my little hobby to the next step and creating a little boutique that will offer a variety products that will have meanings that are near and dear to my heart.  But how did I get to here?  Well….I am a full time teacher for 15 years, wife to my hubby for 16 wonderful years, and a mom to my 10 year old son.  In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, on a whim I took a chalk paint class…that was almost 2 years ago….I was hooked!  Finding old furniture and giving the pieces new life was so much fun!  It was my therapy.  I couldn’t find enough stuff to paint!!  So I began selling the pieces and eventually people wanted me to paint pieces for them!  This was sooo exciting!  People started asking if I had a business…after thinking about it, I thought why not!

Well a business needs a name and immediately, Frankie Jo’s popped into my head.  Frank was my grandfather and Joan (pronounced Joanne) was my grandmother and boom that’s where Frankie Jo’s came from.  But why Frank and Joan?  That’s easy!  I am an only child and I was their only grandchild.  So to say that we were close is an understatement…they were my whole world and I was theirs.  I can remember as a little girl going with my grandmother and her dear sister (Aunt Betty) to garage sales.  My grandmother and Aunt Betty loved antiques, but my Aunt Betty loved to refurbish furniture.  I guess I get it honest!  Anyway…I guess naming my little biz after  my grandparents seemed perfect!  After they passed away, I found the above picture in their house and it’s my absolute fav of them!  I mean this picture says it all.  You can just see the love they had for each other.  Don’t they just look adorable!?!?

So what products will we carry?  Well…I am a distributor of Wise Owl Chalk Synthesis Paint and their full line of paint supplies.  I cannot emphasize enough how much I LOVE this company.  Wise Owl is passionate about so many of the same things I am.  That will be another blog post.  🙂  I love all the paint and supplies but I wanted to carry more!  I am releasing a sneak peek  soon to show some of our new products.  The plan is to introduce new things gradually since I still have a full time job as a teacher, wife, and mom!

Thank you for checking us out!
